🏰 Castell Coch—Welsh for Red Castle—is a striking 19th-century Gothic Revival castle perched above the village of Tongwynlais, just north of Cardiff. Originally built by the Normans after 1081 to guard the Taff Gorge, it was reimagined in the late 1800s by architect William Burges for the wealthy Marquess of Bute, transforming medieval ruins into a fairy-tale fortress.
🌲 Nestled in the Fforest Fawr woodland, its conical turrets, red sandstone walls, and lavishly decorated interiors make it one of Wales’s most romantic and photogenic landmarks. Inside, you’ll find mythical murals, ornate ceilings, and rooms that feel plucked from a medieval dream.
🎟️ Now managed by Cadw, it’s open to the public and offers audio tours, seasonal events, and access to nearby woodland trails—perfect for a day of history and nature.
This will make the project searchable under the projects section.
